There has long been a disconnect between the classroom education many children receive and the everyday circumstances from which they emerge. Hip-hop pedagogy has been formulating over the past three decades as an powerful tool to help students bridge the gap. It has shown the ability to help students elevate their sense of self empowerment, critical analysis, and civic engagement.
Hip hop is now commonplace in many English classes as a way to introduce literary works and devices. But beyond this, it has a more unique ability to help students put the skills learned into real-world practice. Because it is a cultural movement that is at the height of its popularity it garners a certain level of interest from youth. This makes hip-hop particularly well situated as medium to introduce the kinds of concepts and ideas necessary to help students expand their scope.
